Staffing shortages and budget shifts at local ranger districts delay environmental reviews (NEPA) for new trail projects and reduce maintenance capacity — even where there's no direct threat to existing access.

Background

The U.S. Forest Service has announced organizational restructuring, including headquarters relocations and staffing changes at the regional and district level. While this isn't a direct access threat, it has real consequences for trail users: fewer staff at local ranger districts means slower environmental review (NEPA) for new trail projects, delayed permits, and reduced capacity for trail maintenance. Evergreen is tracking these changes and their impact on Washington's ranger districts. We don't have a specific ask yet, but we're watching closely and will alert riders if action is needed.
